NANOPARTICLES

Nanoparticles are particles that range in size from 1 to 100 nanometers (nm) in diameter. Due to their extremely small size, nanoparticles possess unique physical and chemical properties compared to their bulk counterparts, which makes them particularly useful in a variety of fields, including pharmaceuticals, medicine, electronics, and materials science.

Types of Nanoparticles:

Nanoparticles can be broadly categorized based on their composition and shape.

  1. Inorganic Nanoparticles:

Metal Nanoparticles: Includes nanoparticles of metals like gold, silver, and platinum, which are used for applications in drug delivery, imaging, and diagnostics.

  • Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are widely used for drug delivery due to their biocompatibility and ease of functionalization.
  • Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have antimicrobial properties and are used in wound healing and infection control.

Magnetic Nanoparticles: These include iron oxide nanoparticles (e.g., magnetite), which are often used for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), drug delivery, and hyperthermia treatment.

Quantum Dots: Semiconductor nanoparticles that emit fluorescence when exposed to light. Quantum dots are used for applications in biomolecular imaging and diagnostics due to their bright and stable fluorescence.

  1. Organic Nanoparticles:
  • Polymeric Nanoparticles: These are made from biodegradable and biocompatible polymers (e.g., polylactic acid (PLA), polyethylene glycol (PEG)) and are widely used in controlled drug delivery systems.
  • Liposomes: Lipid-based nanoparticles that can encapsulate hydrophilic or hydrophobic drugs. Liposomes are used for targeted drug delivery and vaccine delivery.
  • Dendrimers: Branched polymer nanoparticles that have a well-defined structure, used in drug delivery, gene therapy, and diagnostics.
  1. Carbon-Based Nanoparticles:
  • Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs): Hollow tubes made from carbon atoms, used in drug delivery, biosensing, and tissue engineering.
  • Graphene and Graphene Oxide: Single layers of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, which are used in drug delivery, biosensing, and as materials for bioelectronics.
