IMMEDIATE RELEASE TABLETS (IR TABLETS)

IR Tablets are a type of oral dosage form designed to release the active ingredient quickly after administration. These tablets are formulated to dissolve and release their contents rapidly in the stomach, typically within 30 minutes, allowing the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) to be absorbed into the bloodstream without delay.

Key Characteristics:

  • Rapid Dissolution: The tablet dissolves quickly in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to fast absorption of the drug.
  • Fast Onset of Action: The drug is released rapidly, leading to a quicker therapeutic effect compared to other dosage forms such as extended-release tablets.
  • Short Duration: Because the drug is released and absorbed quickly, the effects may not last as long as with controlled or extended-release formulations. The drug may need to be taken multiple times per day.

Techniques

1.Granulation Granulation is an essential process for preparing the powder mixture to ensure uniformity and ease of handling.

  1. Wet Granulation (Common in Immediate Release Tablets)
  2. Dry Granulation (Alternative for some APIs)

2.Blending After granulation (wet or dry), the granules are blended with additional excipients, including

3.Compression The blended powder mixture is then fed into a tablet press where it is compressed into tablets.

Tablet Pressing: The powder is compressed under controlled pressure in a die cavity to form a solid tablet. The tablet shape, size, and hardness are determined by the settings on the tablet press.

Advantages:

  • Quick action: They deliver the drug promptly into the bloodstream for faster therapeutic effects.
  • Simple formulation: Easier and less expensive to manufacture compared to controlled-release tablets.
  • Flexible dosing: Allows for more precise control over the timing and amount of drug administered.

Disadvantages:

  • Short duration: Frequent dosing may be required for drugs with a short half-life.
  • Peak and trough levels: The drug concentration in the blood can fluctuate, potentially causing side effects or reduced efficacy between doses.

Immediate release tablets are one of the most commonly used forms of medication delivery due to their simplicity and fast action, making them ideal for treating conditions where quick relief is required.
